Over the years I’ve been stressing to my patients and how important saliva is to cavity prevention. We were always taught that if we brush our teeth 2 to 3 times a day and didn’t eat a lot of candy that our teeth should remain healthy. While that is basically true there is much more to preventing dental decay than brushing. Here is the advice that I give my patients about remaining cavity free.

Saliva’s primary goal is to eliminate any sugar in the mouth, if you eat a piece of candy it takes approx. 15 minutes for the saliva to eliminate any traces of that sugar. When a person sips on one can of soda every 15 minutes for 3 hours they are basically soaking their teeth in sugar for 3 hours. It is much worse for the teeth to sip one can of soda in a 3 hour period than it is to drink 3 soda’s in a half hour or so. It is the sugar in the mouth that causes decay not the sugar in your stomach. Sipping on sugary liquids is extremely bad for your teeth. Acidic products are also bad for your teeth, they can cause the enamel to soften and dissolve. Saliva needs approx 15 minutes to neutralize acid.  The worst thing one can do for the teeth is to sip an acidy sugary drink. Carbonated sodas are very acidic, energy drinks are very acidic. Studies have shown that enery drinks are even more harmful to your teeth than sodas.

Make sure what you are mindlessly sipping on all day is non acidic and sugar free (water), if you need the pick me up go ahead and have whatever drink you prefer but remember the dangers of sipping. If you have dental decay and saliva problems contact us now!
